History

Paul's Homewood Cafe is a beloved Annapolis institution with deep Greek roots. In 1947, Paul and Helen Nicholas, immigrants from Cyprus, opened a small lunch counter at a gas station on West Street. Two years later, in 1949, they moved across the street and established the restaurant at its current location (919 West St) in what was then the outskirts of town.

What began as a modest neighborhood lunch spot serving simple Greek and American fare has remained in the Nicholas family for over 75 years. Today, it is owned and operated by Paul’s children — Chris Nicholas (current owner-manager) and his sister Anna — with many third-generation family members also working in the restaurant.

In 2008, the family completed a major renovation that transformed the cozy original space into a casually elegant two-story dining room while preserving the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made it a Homewood neighborhood favorite for generations
